Ask The EDD Attorney – Beware Of New “Hotmail” Phishing Scam

By Robert S. Schriebman

2017

On December 14, 2017 the Internal Revenue Service published press release 2017-203 dealing with phishing scams used to trick tax professionals as well as the general public. Here is what the press releases had to say.

The IRS has received close to 1000 complaints about this new phishing scheme that targets “hotmail” users. While scammer websites have been shut down by the government, you must be on the lookout for new websites as these crooks never rest.

These phishing cams read as follows, “Internal Revenue Service Email No. xxxx / We’re processing your request soon / Txxxxx-xxxxxxx.” The email leads taxpayers to sign in to a fake Microsoft page and then asks for personal and financial information.

If you believe you have received one of these unsolicited emails, purporting to be from the IRS, forward it to [email protected] and then delete it.

I have mentioned this many times in my articles dealing with IRS scams, the IRS does not communicate via email. You will either receive a letter or a telephone call. On rare occasions, especially with today’s manpower shortage in the IRS, you will receive a personal visit from an IRS collector. If you do, always ask to see that person’s credentials.

A good rule of thumb is to totally disregard any emails purporting to be from the IRS.

My motto is, “When in doubt – delete.”
