Ask The California Employment Tax And Payroll Tax Attorney – IRS Launches “Identity Theft Central”
By Robert S. Schriebman
2020
Introduction
The IRS has been working diligently to protect individual taxpayers, tax professionals, and the business community from identity theft and the protection of tax refunds. The IRS has teamed up with the private sector to identify theft scams and to protect the public against phishing, online scams and the safeguarding of tax refunds. This network is known as the Security Summit. Over the years great progress has been made to protect the public, but thieves are clever and the job of protection is never ending.
The IRS and the Security Summit have created a new page on the IRS website known as Identity Theft Central. Its purpose is help people obtain information to identify and stop identity theft.
Identity Theft Central
On February 4, 2020 the IRS released IR-2020-27 to inform the public of the new information database. The new Identity Theft Central includes the following information.
- Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft, including what to if someone becomes a victim of identity theft;
- Identity Theft Information for Tax Professionals, including knowing responsibilities under the law
- Identity Theft Information for Businesses, including how to recognize the signs of identity theft
The new website page will feature videos and warning signs for email scams, and steps that you can do to protect your privacy, your phone and your computer. There is something for everyone, professions and lay people as well.
Conclusion
I applaud Commissioner Chuck Rettig for setting up this very beneficial public service. As developments occur within the IRS to protect your data and your refund, I will keep you informed.
