Ask The California Employment Tax And Payroll Tax Attorney – Irs Announces Reduction Of Practitioner Hotline Services

By Robert S. Schriebman

2021

Introduction

If you have been dealing with IRS matters for some time, you may be familiar with the IRS’ ‘practitioner hotline’ formerly known as the Practitioner Priority Service (PPS) (866) 860-4259.  This service has been very helpful in cutting through bureaucratic red tape in resolving many issues and problems.  One of the outstanding features of the hotline was the ability to promptly obtain several types of transcripts sent by FAX.  Unfortunately, the transcript ordering service has been discontinued in favor of obtaining transcripts online through the IRS website.

The PPS was also available for resolving collection matters and obtaining installment agreements and short-term payment plans.  Say goodbye to this service too.

On June 2, 2021, the IRS issued a press release telling practitioners that PPS services will no longer be available for resolving most collection issues.  This function has now been assigned exclusively to the Automated Collection System (ACS).  ACS will now be the exclusive agent for resolving collection issues.  Practitioners must now contact ACS to resolve those account issues.

PPS personnel will now assist by verbally providing transcript information, allocating misapplied payments, correcting math errors, account adjustments, balance due issues, and missing returns.

If you have collection issues to resolve, such as working out an installment payment arrangement or a short-term informal installment plan, you will be rerouted by PPS directly to ACS.

When you call PPS, you will be given several options to press on your phone.  Option #4, the old help line, is still viable to begin the process of resolving collection issues.
