Ask The California Employment Tax And Payroll Tax Attorney – Covid-19 – Edd Worker Status Audits Resume On A Limited Basis

 By Robert S. Schriebman

2020

The purpose of this article is to give you a brief status report on the resumption of EDD audits. Back in mid-March 2020, EDD auditors left their desks and were reassigned to handle the enormous volume of new UI claims and other matters brought about by the pandemic. During this period, I was in constant contact with members of the audit staff in an effort to determine when worker status audits would resume. Auditors were busy handling the unprecedented volume of UI related claims. No one had a clue as to when the audit function would resume. Recently, I contacted top tier management at the EDD and learned that worker status audits began in August, but at a very low level. The majority of auditors are still teleworking and performing their duties remotely. At this point in time, the EDD is continuing to take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of staff and members of the public. Some auditors have begun to rotate into their respective audit offices while others remain at remote locations.

I will continue to keep you posted, but it is clear that the audit function is on its way to resuming a new level of normality. Only time will tell when this will eventually happen.
